Phew! Finally we arrive at the last day in this series of Personal Finance in 31 days.
Did you enjoy it? Did you learn something new?
Today's tip is a challenge for you to keep seeking ways to reinforce the fact that you are wealthy, every day, in fun ways -don't take life or yourself too seriously. Know that money, riches, and cash are just tools to use in making life worth living, fun living. They are not the end in themselves.
Wealth is defined in the Oxford dictionary of English as
1.1 The state of being rich; material prosperity
2.
A plentiful supply of a particular desirable thing
Wealth mentality refers
to the mindset that produces wealth. And that transcends just having cash. It
is being able to produce your material possessions should in case something
happens that makes you lose everything you presently own.
A rich man once said that if all
was taken from him, and he was left with his brain and people, he will
reproduce everything over. Now, that is a truly rich person. It is not the
person who clings tightly to money as if their life depends on it.
What we find today in Nigeria is
a prevalent poverty mentality among politicians, professionals like doctors,
lawyers, accountants etc, and ordinary citizens alike. It is this poverty
mindset brought upon people, no, which people have brought upon themselves (because
they refuse to read and continually seek information- life transforming
information, acting on it) that has left the country in shambles.
Some people are so poor, all
they have is money. But not you! You understand that all wealth is produced-
the product of a mind, a wealthy mind with a wealth mentality. Read the article if you haven’t.
The wealth mentality will not
let you attach your life values to money or material possessions, instead to
relationships. You value people far above what you can get from them, or make
from them.
The wealth mentality will not
allow you to worship money, or behave like you cannot survive without cash. I like
some secondary schools in Nigeria, particularly the government schools built in
the ‘bush’. It creates a mindset among a young person that regardless of where
they find themselves, they can survive. Well, maybe not all of them sha.
The bible says a good name is to
be valued far above riches. And you know Nigerians didn’t use to think like
this before oh, even as early as 25 years ago. Our grandparents valued good values and
taught us to pursue honesty and forthrightness. But along the line, we
substituted all that for material acquisitions. And the average Nigerian values
a big brand new jeep/SUV, regardless of how it was acquired, above principles.
In fact the poverty mindset is so
prevalent that if an honest, hardworking member of the society drives past with
his/her tokunbo, s/he will most likely be abused as being ‘slow’, a fool, or
even a thief, whereas the politicians and unscrupulous civil servants are now
being glorified as the smart ones. Maybe that’s why many people are now going
into politics (either to prove that they are smart, or it’s because they are
smart they are going there).
So, to reinforce your wealth
mentality every day, value the knowledge that produces wealth above wealth
itself. Value people above material possessions, and most of all, do not attach
too much seriousness to yourself or what you have acquired because today we
are, and tomorrow we shall be no more.
Live well. Enjoy life.
